Pre-Departure Camera Woes

I'm having a bad day.  Only 10 days until my departure to Morocco, and now my Sony NEX-6 camera, the one I was planning to take, is refusing to recognize its own lens. This is the same lens it's been using for over a year with no problems. After trying foreign-language tech "support" (what a misnomer!), hours of online troubleshooting, and much cleaning, re-connecting and re-booting, I've given up.

I think I can hear my neighbor Jon snickering. He's not a fan of Sony cameras, but this has been a great little camera up till now. It has interchangeable lenses, a compact mirrorless design, a big sensor, viewfinder, it shoots in RAW, and takes great photos. But I admit that none of this matters if it doesn't want to play with its own lens.

I'm still weighing my options, but I think I'll take it with its 55-210 lens (which apparently it has no quarrel with), and a tiny Sony RX100-II that will give me the focal length of the NEX lens that went bad. Two cameras? Yes, because now Sony can't be trusted.  Jon, I should have listened!

Countdown to Morocco

In just one month, I'll be departing for Morocco!  This is a destination that's been on my wish list for a long time and in the planning stages since last fall.  I'll be traveling with three dear friends: Judi, Deborah, and Mary Jane, and together we'll make a 24-day journey around this exotic land on the northern tip of Africa.  We'll have our own car and driver and can adjust our trip on the spur of the moment when serendipity beckons.

We eagerly anticipate wandering (and getting lost!) in ancient serpentine medinas, visiting traditional souks and mosques, and touring the UNESCO World Heritage city of Fez, the world's largest medieval Islamic city.  We'll awaken each morning to pre-dawn calls to prayer from atop tall minarets and perhaps soak in traditional hammams at day's end.
We'll see snake charmers, acrobats, and fortune tellers and have our hands painted in henna at the carnivalesque Djemaa el-Fna square in Marrakech.  We'll attend the Sufi Music Festival in Fes, cross the High Atlas and the Anti Atlas Mountains, and relax in the town of Chefchaouen high in the Rif Mountains where all buildings are painted the color of the sky.

We'll do some hiking and ride camels in the Sahara and sleep in the dunes under a blanket of stars.  We'll visit small villages still occupied by the Berbers and sip mint tea in their homes.   We'll wander among kasbahs and oases, visit Roman ruins, and complete our trip in the seaside city of Essaouira before flying home from Casablanca on May 1st.  I can hardly wait!

This is my first blog post.  Ever.  So please bear with me as I get my bearings!

The long steep staircase in the photo represents how I'm feeling right now as I'm building this website, also my first.   But that's me at the top, so maybe there's hope!

This temple is part of the vast archaeological ruins of the ancient city of Ayutthaya, Thailand.  In the 1300's, it was the capital of the country then known as Siam.

Lauren and I were there in January of 2013;  I'll post more photos from our trip under my site's Southeast Asia tab soon.

First Blog From my Phone

This is a test to see how easy it is to post a blog entry (with a photo) from my iPhone.

Result:  easy to do, but the photo arrived at my website in a huge size.  Not sure I can re-size on the phone before posting.  It can be re-sized on the computer, but this results in a loss of resolution.
